State and Local Laws and Policy

It is important to familiarize yourself with the state laws and your local district’s homeschooling policies.

Being a member of RIGHT, HSLDA or another organization can also give you a place to voice questions and find community.

If you have any difficulty gaining approval from your district or have questions about the process, contact us for help.

Rhode Island Home Education Laws:

16-19-1  Attendance required – ages of compulsory attendance

16-19-2  Approval of private schools – subjects required by law, submission of attendance registers, and other instructions

16-22-2  Civics – as a required subject; encompasses previously required subjects in 16-19-2

16-22-4  Instruction in health and physical education

16-23-2  Loan of Textbooks – should you wish to borrow texts from the school
